I think that’s a good start!
The science says that oil pulling does in fact have benefits
Sesame Oil has shown to reduce S. mutans aka germs. Multiple studies have shown that sesame oil is an anti bacterial, this means cavity prevention and gingivitis!
From the FoodMatters website:
A 2007 study looking into the effect of oil pulling (with sunflower oil) on plaque and gingivitis on oral soft and hard tissues. Results found that after 45 days of oil pulling, subjects showed a statistically significant reduction in gingivitis.
Another study , conducted in 2008 found a “remarkable reduction in the total count of bacteria” in the mouth, and an overall marked reduction in susceptibility dental cavities. The antibacterial activity of sesame oil was also studied and found to have an effect on the Streptococcus mutans in the mouth.
In fact, these studies showed an overall reduction of bacteria from 10 to 33.4% in participants, and after 40 days of oil-pulling, participants were found to show 20% in average reduction in oral bacteria. Moreover, half of all participants in this case study showed a drastic reduction in susceptibility to dental caries.
That’s pretty impressive!
Your next question may be what kind of oil should I use to get the most of these benefits?
My answer is all of them. There’s very good evidence that Coconut Oil has serious benefits while Sesame has others! I use them both. The most important factor is that you get a RAW oil.
Here’s more on Coconut Oil
Just like anything else everyone has an opinion. That’s why I rotate between the two. Make sure you look for:
Cold Pressed Sesame or Virgin Unrefined Coconut
Now you’re asking how do I do this?
Good question! It’s very easy
Swish a Tablespoon around in your mouth for 20 minutes. Spit.
Spit into a garbage can or you’ll clog your pipes and DON’T SWALLOW. The jokes in my mind are endless here, but seriously this oil is full of bacteria and toxins.
When you’re just getting started it’s hard to swish for 20 minutes. Try working your way up. Or spit when you need to, then start with another spoonful.
I see people say 10-15 minutes is good enough. If that’s the best you can do, do your best! I tell my clients all the time, ANYTHING is better than nothing!!!
Taking your first step is all that matters!
The best part about oil pulling? There are no side effects, so you can try it with out any fear.
I love oil pulling! My teeth are whiter, the feel cleaner, and my gums never bleed anymore. After pulling for about 6 months my teeth feel like I just got out of a cleaning at my dentist all the time! I struggle with cavities and deep crevices in my teeth that are just impossible to keep clean. I’ve had a tooth pulled from all the damage and another one is on that path. I’ve been pulling in an attempt to save that tooth (along with other things). So far my dentist says I’m holding steady. Here’s to hoping it actually improves!
Good luck, let me know how it goes in the comments or on my facebook page Facebook.com/stashahealthcatalyst
